We’ve set out to build the best app for self-learning anything. And the way we do that is by taking the most powerful insights from cognitive science and turning them into an easy-to-use app.
But why us?
It all started around six years ago, when Dom faced a learning challenge bigger than he could handle…
Our story
Dom always thought he was a pretty smart guy (after all, he studied physics, and worked as a spacecraft engineer 🚀). But when he met his Chinese wife and tried to learn Mandarin, he realized he his learning method was not up to the test. This prompted him to dive into learning science, and create Traverse, a research-based learning tool that can help anyone master though topics.
Using Traverse himself, he was able to get fluent in Mandarin, live in China and chat with his wife’s family and friends.
Traverse has helped tens of thousands of learners since, and together with you we are on our way to building the best learning tool for learning complex topics.
What’s up with the name “Traverse”?
One of the first things Dom came across in his deep dive into learning science, was a quote by Elon Musk:
“When I set out to tackle something – to solve some problem or create something new – first, it just seems insurmountable. When you enter a new field, you don't know anything; you don't even know what people are talking about! But, if I just persevere, if I keep going in this direction, eventually I'll start seeing what resembles a branch or a trunk, and then a leaf or two, and then I can start putting them together. Eventually, I'll see the whole tree.”
Elon describes the tree of knowledge. Once Dom started to program the app, he needed to make the software walk through the tree from root to the outer branches. In mathematical jargon, this is called a “Tree traversal”. And the name Traverse was born.
There’s one more part to the story. Not all knowledge fits a tree format. Often, when going deep into one branch, you discover the same basic principle that also underlies a completely different branch of knowledge. In other words, the tree needs to be not only traversed, but different branches also need to be linked. After realizing this, Dom bought the domain traverse.link.
Our Team
Dom
Dom speaks 5 languages. It was actually his love for language that drove him to create Traverse.
He enjoys long bike rides and traveling the world.
About Hans
Hans enjoys the city life of London while creating amazing designs in a matter of seconds.
As well as a group of amazing developers, writers, and marketing and business advisors who are making their anonymous but powerful contributions!
Our Community
Besides our team, our users are also an indispensable part of Traverse’s mission.
Take Raleigh, for example, who first discovered Traverse’s potential for medical study. Together with other medical students, like Felicia and Jesus, he provided the feedback and input we needed to create the best tool.
Below are some more quotes from Traverse community members. You can join us on Discord, looking forward to seeing you there 🤗
