FAQ

How can I add a simple flashcard decks, for example for language learning?
The simplest way is just keeping a single note with your vocab, and using cloze deletes to quickly create flashcards from them:

How can I adjust the number of cards to review every day?
See here
How can I review a specific level/Traverse?
Choose “Manage flashcards” when starting your reviews:

Then select the level/Traverse you’d like to review:

And then click the blue button at the bottom to start reviews!
What happens if I miss my reviews for a day?
If you miss your reviews, those flashcards will stay in your review queue for the next days, so you may see more cards then (unless you have hit your daily limit, in which case it will be balanced out over multiple days). Longer vacations are no problem, the algorithm will just spread out your cards once you return.
Why do I get logged out every time I go to Traverse?
You don’t get logged out, but the homepage is the same for everyone, whether logged out or logged in. Instead of going to the homepage, save https://traverse.link/app to your bookmarks. If you visit that page, you’ll automatically be logged in.
Why do I still have cards for review after going into one of my Traverses, even if I have cleared all reviews from the main screen?
That would only happen if you have more cards due for review than your daily limit. You can view your daily limit setting by clicking the Wheel icon in the flashcard dialog box.
For example, if your limit is set to 50, and you reviewed 50 cards, it will show as 0 on the main screen. But maybe there were even more cards due for review (say, 100 in total). If you go into one of the Traverses, say level 12, the limit is now applied to Level 12. If level 12 has 20 more cards to review, they will now show. It's basically a way of allowing you to focus on a certain topic even if you've already reviewed 'enough' for the day.

Which cards are reviewed first when I have more cards to review than my daily limit?
If your daily limit is, say 50 reviews/day, but you have 100 cards due for review in total, the 50 cards that are shown will be selected from the total of 100 cards as follows:
  • First, cards that are due today
  • Then, cards that were due yesterday
  • Then, cards that were due the day before yesterday
  • And so on
These 50 cards are then presented for review in a random order.
Since cards with a later due date are prioritized, this ensures that you can keep reviewing fresh cards according to their spaced repetition schedule, even if you have a large backlog of older cards (since, especially for very old cards, the exact review time is less critical). You can then gradually work your way through your backlog.
What if I want to review my backlog rather than most recent cards?
The easiest way to review your backlog of cards, is to set a higher review limit. If there are any cards which you don’t want to review right now, you can select them in the flashcard manager and choose “Move to tomorrow”.
How can I create reverse flashcard?
You can create a reverse flashcards by duplicating a flashcard, and then clicking the button with the two arrows to swap question and answer:
How can I suspend or pause all cards from a topic from my reviews?
You can do this by selecting the topic from the Manage flashcards screen, selecting all cards and then choosing Suspend from reviews.
What is the difference between the new cards/day and the reviews/day limits?
The new cards/day limit applies to flashcards which you have added to your reviews, but not reviewed yet. Once you have reviewed a card at least once, it counts towards the reviews/day limit.
notion image
How many cards can I expect for review each day?
The number of cards for review each day depends on many factors, especially how difficult you rated those cards when you last reviewed them. But as a rule of thumb, if you add roughly the same number of new cards every day, you can expect your number of reviews every day to be around 10 times that number. So if you add 5 new cards every day, expect your review count to stabilize at around 50.
How to make overview maps which link to topical maps?
TBD!
I see fewer flashcards due for review than I expected
This is usually due to one of the following two reasons:
  1. Your daily review limits are set too low. You can change them in your review options.
    1. notion image
  1. You are starting the reviews from within a specific topic. This will only review the flashcards within that topic. To review all flashcards, start your reviews from the homescreen (https://traverse.link/app) instead.
I have flashcards with audio but am not hearing any sound
If you are on iOS, make sure that your device is not in silent mode.
Other things to check:
  • The tab is not muted in the browser
  • Your browser website permissions for Traverse allow audio
  • Check if any browser extensions interfere with website audio and/or auto play
Do you have a mobile app?
We are working on mobile apps for Traverse. In fact, the first version for Android can be found in the Google Play Store. The iOS version is still under review by Apple.
Is there a desktop/Mac/Windows app?
You can install Traverse on your desktop by opening it in Google Chrome, and then clicking Install in the address bar (see https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/9658361?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop)
I don’t have a process for reviewing my notes, making note-taking feel like a waste of time. How can I make my learning process more productive?
If you already have a good note-taking process, that’s a good start. As a next step, you can make your notes visual, and connect them. When it comes to reviewing, the fastest way to build an effective review practice is by creating ‘fill-in-the-blank’ cards. They are very fast to create, helping you to quickly create a useful set of review cards. They can be either text-based (also called ‘cloze deletion’) or visual (also called ‘occlusion’).
To create cloze deletion, you can select any text in your notes, and press New flashcard, then press Create Cloze. This will create a flashcard that contains the same paragraph, but with the selected text blanked out for you to quiz yourself on.

To create an occlusion card, you can press “Add map occlusion” for any note. This will create a flashcard that shows this part of the mind map, but with the selected note title blanked out. (Note: map occlusions are a premium feature)

I’m having issues logging into Traverse
Here's some things to try when you have trouble logging in:
  • Check if you’re trying to log in with the right email. Especially when using Log In With Google it’s easy to accidentally create multiple accounts.
  • Remove your site cookies for Traverse and retry
  • Try if logging in works in a private tab
  • Are you using a VPN? Our backend runs on Google Cloud so the Google servers must be accessible for the app to work.
How to modify flashcards during review?
To edit flashcards during review, you can click the ... button in the top bar, and click Edit flashcard. You can then edit, save, and continue your reviews.
How to pick a prop for a flashcard?
With Mandarin Blueprint, how can I only practice ‘reading character’ flashcards and ignore ‘writing character’ flashcards?
Go to your “Manage flashcards” screen, select ‘Movie reviews’ and suspend the cards you don’t want to review:

Can I reset my Mandarin Blueprint flashcard progress and customizations?
Yes you can, however be aware that this step is irreversible. It will reset all progress and all customizations in all Mandarin Blueprint levels. You can find this options in your account settings → Reset all progress

I’m not seeing the courses I expect on my home screen?
This is probably a permissions issue. If you are in the Mandarin Blueprint course, contact contact@mandarinblueprint.com. Otherwise, contact dom@traverse.link.

I’m having problems accessing/logging in to Traverse in mainland China
Traverse uses Google Cloud on the backend, so you need a VPN to access it in China. We recommend QuickQ or Astrill, which have worked well for people using Traverse in China.
Accidentally reviewed flashcards
Traverse does not offer a feature to reverse the review of flashcards. Nevertheless, you can manually mark specific cards for review using the flashcard manager.
To achieve this, follow these steps:
1. Access the flashcard manager.
2. Select the cards you want to reset.
3. Opt for the "Review Today" option.
By performing these steps, the selected cards will reappear as new items in your review queue.
Network Error in Signing Up
Are you trying to access Traverse from China by any chance? You will need a VPN in that case since we use Google Cloud in the backend.
If not, could you try the following just to make sure:
1. **Check Your Internet Connection:** Ensure that your internet connection is stable and functioning properly.
2. **Refresh the Page:** Try refreshing the webpage to see if the issue resolves itself.
3. **Clear Browser Cache and Cookies:** Clear your browser's cache and cookies, as this may help resolve any underlying issues.
4. **Disable Browser Extensions:** Temporarily disable any browser extensions that could potentially interfere with the webpage's functionality.
5. **Try Another Browser or Device:** If the problem persists, consider using a different web browser or device to access the website.
If none of these steps prove effective, you also have the option to sign up using your Apple or Google account as an alternative method.
Dark mode in Traverse
Traverse currently does not have a native support for dark mode. The creator of Traverse mentioned in a YouTube video that there has been some research suggesting that people absorb information better when it's black text on a white background, rather than the other way around. This is one of the reasons why a dark mode has not been a high priority. However, the creator also mentioned that users could potentially build a dark mode themselves using CSS. It's not ruled out for the future, but as of now, it's not high on the to-do list.
IOS APP
You can now find a first version of the app in the App Store (search for Traverse Flashcards)!
Changing an image in a flashcard
To modify flashcards during review on the desktop web version of Traverse, you can click the ... button in the top bar, and click Edit flashcard. From there, you should be able to change the image - the easiest is to select the image and then press backspace to delete it. You can then use the + button to insert another image (or just use copy-paste).

Creating new flash cards
If you go to your account settings in the top right, you have a button to reset all Mandarin Blueprint progress (irreversible). Alternatively you can select any flashcards from the flashcard manager and suspend them or mark them as due as desired.
Cancel Traverse subscription
You can cancel your subscription from here: https://traverse.thrivecart.com/updateinfo/, let me know if that works. Also, I'd love to know what made you cancel?
How can I have the flash cards give me multiple views for review.
For the Mandarin Blueprint cards, you can only review with the views already provided. However if you want, you can create a new Traverse and add your own cards there with the specific views you'd like.
How many times a card would come up if you always hit the "good" (third) option?
When you consistently select the "good" option for a card in Traverse, the card will appear less frequently over time due to the spaced repetition algorithm. This algorithm is designed to optimize your learning by showing you the card just before you're about to forget it. However, the card will not completely stop showing up. It will continue to appear, but at increasingly longer intervals. This is because, according to the principles of spaced repetition, even well-learned information needs to be refreshed occasionally to keep it in your long-term memory.
The exact intervals depend also on things like how long it takes you to respond, but it's roughly 1 day, 6 days, 13 days and so on increasing.
How does the system ensure the default privacy of Traverses, and what specific assurances can you provide regarding the non-utilization of user-entered data for internal purposes, including data analysis and AI applications?
Your Traverses are private by default unless you explicitly share them. None of the data you enter is used internally for data analysis or AI etc.
Can I use Traverse Offline?
Currently that's not possible, you need an active internet connection.
Is there a way to separate the flash cards so that, during the reviews, the MB Pronunciation cards are not mixed in with the MB Method cards?
You can use the "Manage flashcards" feature to select and review specific levels or flashcard types (eg pronunciation, movie reviews etcs). Just select the type you want to review in the drop down, and then click the blue review button in the bottom center.
